The two gates

Coins without the level do nothing. The level without the coins does nothing. Garden Spider’s adult level is 12, which is the same number as the first evolution. After you pick, Housefly and Grasshopper list an adult level of 15, so the next stretch is short.

Housefly or Grasshopper

Housefly’s Buzz Off is a 4-second burst of +55% move speed with free sprinting, on a 14-second cooldown, and the passive adds 8% XP from everything. Grasshopper’s Spring Leap is a long jump whose next bite deals 1.4× damage, on a 5-second cooldown, and jumps cost 50% less stamina. Health is 105 versus 120. Speed is 20 versus 22. I would spend the 200 coins on Housefly when the meadow is killing me, and on Grasshopper when I am already winning bites. The Housefly and Grasshopper pages go further.

Black Widow after Housefly

Black Widow is the level-15, 450-coin step off Housefly, not off Grasshopper. One wiki also describes a Tracking task on the way there. I keep both: the coin gate from the catalog and the task from the wiki. Poison on every bite, Venom Bite for three poisoned hits, and Web Shot at the skill level. See Black Widow.

• Tier 4 at level 28 costs 1,800 coins (Funnel-Web, Katydid, Mosquito, Wolf Spider, Horsefly, Swallowtail).
• Tier 5 at level 40 costs 12,000 (Goliath Birdeater, Lubber, Luna Moth, Robber Fly, Tarantula).
• Tier 6 at level 55 costs 35,000 (Atlas Moth, Brood Mother, Dragonfly).
• Tier 7 at level 80 costs 75,000 (Death's-Head Moth, Giant Hornet, Giant Huntsman).

During the evolution animation, other players cannot hit you, according to the area and progression write-ups. I would not count on that as a combat trick. It is a transition, not a shield you can trigger on purpose.
